Antique Persian Lilian Rug
Size: 8'9" × 12'
Date: 1920s
Material: Wool on Cotton
From the Arak weaving district of west-central Iran, Lilian rugs are village pieces known for their all-over floral compositions and warm, saturated colour. At this scale they make a genuine statement in a room.
The coral-red field is covered with a sprawling bilateral floral design — large curving vines, oversized palmettes, serrated acanthus leaves, and paisley forms that interlock across the full surface without a central medallion to anchor them. The pattern reads as both structured and organic, with the symmetry holding the composition together while the individual forms retain a loose, hand-drawn quality. The wide navy border carries its own dense floral scroll, detailed enough to hold attention on its own.
What distinguishes this piece from the smaller Lilian listed separately is the way the larger format lets the pattern breathe. The repeat has room to develop fully, and the border proportions sit correctly against the field. The coral-rose tone of the field is warmer and slightly lighter than typical madder red, giving this rug a softer overall feel that works well in a variety of interiors.
A well-preserved room-size piece from a reliable and underappreciated weaving tradition.
